Crayon Face Cartoon Drawing

After doing a self portrait we adapt human facial features to cartoons and show how a cartoon can be a simplified human face. A short lesson on drawing cartoon faces is covered in class after which the assignment is introduced.

This assignment is loosely based on Chuck Close's work. Mr. Close paints huge faces and uses a grid to enlarge photographs. Students are to draw 5 small sketches of possible cartoon faces to use for this assignment. They then pick one and grid it out so they can easily enlarge it onto the large paper.

Sometime during this whole process another lesson is covered in class where students are to use crayons and follow the instructor as he demonstrates how to layer crayon colors to make various shapes appear three dimensional.

After the students have their face drawn lightly on the large paper the grid lines are erased and they go about using the crayon layering technique to give the face volume.
