Painted Robots

Students watch and paint along as the teacher demonstrates how to paint highlights and shadows on an object using white and black paint on gray.

First we paint a few objects with gray tempera. While the gray dries we go through images of robots in the book, Little Robots by Michael Brownlow.

The class, again, follows the teacher painting what he paints in front of class. We add white to the sides of shapes to make the highlights, and black to the sides of shapes to make the shadows.

A quick lesson on drawing robot pieces and parts is given. Again students follow along on their paper as the teacher draws in front of the class.

Finally students are given the good paper to draw and paint their robots. Each robot must include appropriate highlights and shadows. Students also name their robots and add a name tag to the bottom of their robot painting. If time permits, we share our robot names and explain why we chose those names.
