Principles of Art: Emphasis

Students are shown images that have obvious bold use of the design principle, Emphasis.

From there they are given a 1/4 sheet of paper and asked to fill it with X's. When they're done they are asked to make one of the X's bold. They flip the paper over and fill it with O's and color one of the O's.

Next students make a frame around their paper and scribble inside the frame. Depending on the amount of time left in the class, students are to shade in a few of the shapes created by the scribbles. These shaded parts are areas of emphasis. Next they choose one area near the center of the page and fill that with a color. That becomes the real emphasis.

To conclude the lesson the teacher asks what the emphasis should be in a family. Love is the answer.
