This assignment is one in which students get to challenge the teacher and then the teacher gets to challenge the students.

I ask a student to come up and draw a random squiggle on the board then I make that squiggle into something. It may turn into a face, a crazy car, or a monster.

Then each student is given a piece of paper and I draw a special (just for them) squiggle on their paper. They, then have to turn my squiggle into something. A caveat: They can't make snakes, worms, or letters out of my squiggle.

When the majority are finished with their drawing we stand up and walk around the room viewing each person's creation. The teacher talks about how making art is just one part of it. Displaying art for people to view is another aspect. And finally Critique is discussed as a very important part of artwork.

After students have seen eachother's work we talk about the artworks that students thought stood out. "What did I like about it and why?" is the question we must answer as we look at eachother's artwork. Class discussion can easily take more time that our drawings.
