Train --ing

Students are shown images of old steam trains. After viewing and discussing images of old steam trains with the class, the teacher shows students how easy it is to draw a steam locomotive and rail cars on the board while they follow along drawing on their practice paper.

Students are then given a long strip of paper to draw their own trains. They are instructed to start by laying down their track (drawing a long line across the bottom of the paper) and putting their name under the track on the right. Next, they add the rail road ties, and after that start drawing the wheels for the engine right above their names.

They may add as many train cars as they want. The teacher may have additional train car ideas drawn on the board such as:
  • Flat bed car with excavator or elephant
  • Tanker car
  • Double decker passenger car or automobile carrier
