Spring Kites

This lesson is done periodically in all grades at Atwater Elementary

Minnesota K-3 Visual Art Standards Used in This Lesson:

  • 1. Identify the elements of visual art including Color, line, shape, Form, Value, texture and space.

  • 2. Identify the tools, materials and techniques from a variety of two- and three-dimensional media such as drawing, printmaking, ceramics or sculpture.

  • 3. Identify the characteristics of visual artworks from a variety of cultures including the contributions of Minnesota American Indian tribes and communities.

  • 4. Create original two- and three- dimensional artworks to express ideas, experiences or stories.

  • 5. Share and describe a personal artwork and reflect on a presentation based on the feedback of others.

  • 6. Compare and contrast the characteristics of a variety of works of visual art.

    • This project is adapted according to the grade level that it is taught.

    Kindergarten and first grade will color their kites with shapes and work hard to cut them out neatly

    2nd grade will color their kites with patterns

    3rd will learn about graffiti art and put their initials on the kites in a graffiti letters

    4th will be given a graphic design assignment as if they were in the advertising firm. Some assignments include: Outdoor play park imagery, Corporate logo collage, Warm and cool color collage with ripped paper pieces, and more.

    Students are given an handout where they can draw or color or collage, then cut out. Sometimes the handouts are copied on colored paper so each student can make a different colored tail by trading kite tails with friends.
