Kites

Students are shown how to make a "kite" in class by cutting a diamond out of a page of paper. (click here for an outline that students can cut out if time is short.) Students draw lines from corner to corner simulating the wood kite ribs. Discussion takes place regarding a new vocabulary word, Quadrant. Then have to fill each quadrant with a different pattern.

First they have to write their favorite number in one quadrant. Then fill that quadrant with the exact number of lines that correspond to their favorite number, using their favorite color. (for example if their favorite color is seven and their favorite color is purple, they'd write seven in one quadrant and fill it with seven purple lines.)

In another quadrant, students need to figure out what number is one more than their favorite and fill the quadrant with that many spots of different colors. (In the example above, this quadrant would be filled with 8 circles.)

Next, students need to figure out if they are 5 or six years old. If they are 5, they should draw stars in the third quadrant. If they are six, they should make moon shapes.

And finally, they can draw what they want in the fourth quadrant.

While they draw the teacher comes around and helps them tape a yarn tail to their kite. When they're all done they can color and cut out some bows to add to the tail.
