First Day --Baseline Data

The first day in art class students learn how Mr. Kulzer runs his class.

We start out gathering in our Art Start Spot on the floor where students will see examples and be introduced to the lesson and objectives at the beginning of each period. They need to sit in the center so that as Mr. Kulzer runs around the room he doesn't "step on anyone's fingers or toes or nose."

We start by talking about hamburger and hotdog folds of paper. Practicing each on a sheet will give us 4 separate areas to draw on.

This lesson is all about gathering "baseline data". We see how the students can draw each of the given prompts. Drawings are collected and saved by Mr. Kulzer, then at the end of the year students are to draw the same things. Their previous drawings are given back to them afterward to see how much they've improved.

Below are a couple examples shown in class to demonstrate how improvements are made over the course of years of practice. Each student needed to draw:
  • Face

  • Animal

  • Car

  • Something from Nature
